I own a black horse statue 19"x19" plaster original by Ross Butler that was in my grandfathers bar in the 1930's. I am wondering what it would be worth since I have seen one sold on the internet for $5000.00

Link to Wansdyke

Fascinated to find this site as, along with "Stonehenge of the KIngs" by Patrick Crampton and the works of TC Lethbridge, it is my favourite sideways look at history book.

Interesting that you link to my little excursion along the Wansdyke. I have speculated elsewhere that patrols out along the Roman road from Bath might have stopped and regrouped above the Cherhill Black Horse in Oldbury Castle before pushing on past Avebury and might even have been instrumental in the end of a Roman Village at West Overton, taxes, recruitment of the young men etc while ignoring those scruffy economic migrants coming up from the Thames valley.

Cheers

I really enjoyed reading the interesting historical stuff. Good luck on visiting all the other BH pubs! And I'm sorry to see that some Slavonic buffoon has cluttered up the guestbook with questionable links. Cheers, Mike

Hi Jon, my wife Wendy and I run The Black Horse pub and restaurant in Littleport and although on your master list it is not marked as one you visited already, you have a photograph of our mooring sign referring to narrow boats as "longboats". I hope you will find your way to Cambridgeshire within the next 10 years so I can pull your pint personally. In the meantime please check www.TheBlackHorsePubLittleport.co.uk.
Hoping to see you some day,
Harry

This pub is currently called Bar Bed and is more bar than pub. As the Estates Manager for the pubco that owns it I'm very happy to be able to tell you that it is being refurbished by new tenants in traditional style - it will, however, be called The Zeppelin Shelter (for good historic reasons) not Black Horse.

Blck Horse Pub in Grimston

Hi I am very interested when you visit the Black Horse Pub in Grimston in Leicestershore as it was once owned by my grandfather Thomas Whittington. When we were over there about 15 years ago we went there but it was closed so my dad could not see inside but the whole village was the same. If you visit it could you please email me any information you get on the pub. It would be greatly appricated as we can get no information on it or if you know where I can get any information it would be appricated
Thank you Pat

This inn was sadly demolished in 2001 to be replaced by modern housing. It was close to Black Horse Broad, also known as Hoveton Little Broad.

I think the Black Horse in Richmond has also more recently been demolished and replaced by housing. It's garden was home to an unusually shaped tree called The Black Horse Pollard Chestnut - I do not know if this still exists?

Good luck on your quest to visit those that remain!

Another Black Horse Inn ?

Hi there !! Don't see a mention of the Black Horse Inn on Bolton Lane,Hose,Leics LE14 4JE
Tel: 01949 860336.
My son's ancestors kept it in the 1870s and it is still open and run at present by Mick and Gail Aram. THought you might like to add it to the list. I came across your website while I was looking for a photo of it to put in my Family Tree program. Good luck with your idea of having a drink in them all - maybe you'll get into the Guinness (no pun intended) Book of Records. All the best, Andrea

Black Horse Inn, Monkseaton

Dear Jon:

As a Brit living in San Diego for many years, I came across your site while looking for the words to the song "Let's Get Together by John W. Bratton. I thought it quite a coincidence that I should stumble upon your site, having attended Jarrow Grammar School while living in Hebburn, and subsequently living in Monkseaton. I have visited the Black Horse Inn in Monkseaton many times and if you want to know any of its history I know a lady related to a former owner.

I enjoyed your site. You've put a lot of work into it. I could not resist making an entry in your guestbook because of the coincidental way I found your page while browsing here in San Diego.

Yours sincerely,
Eileen McKoy

Dawes Brewery

I am interested in any items that have to do with the Dawes Black Horse Brewery in LaChine, Canada.
My husband Chris is the grandson of Norman Dawes, past owner and President of Dawes Brewery.
His father, Ormiston Dawes was the vice President. There is a Dawes Museum in Canada, and I would love to add items to the collection.
Thanks for the great site, and any help you could give me.

Wow-Wow-Wee-Wah!!!! LOVE YOUR SITE JB!!!
I can think of no better pastime than to take up this wonderful challenge! It's light and airy, fun and crazy! Thank you so much for documenting your adventures and placing them on the web.

I have a question about Black Horse in St Albans. (It's not on either of your "Those Done" or on "Those to Do" lists) Does this mean that it does not exist anymore?

Also, I have a listing for a Black Horse Pub on Spicer Street, St Albans
1881. Run by James Garley. Wondering if you have ever heard of that one?

Take care %26 keep the suds flowing!

Dawes Breweries

I came to your site while researching the origin of a framed poster in my posession since childhood. It shows two blacksmiths (my grandfather was a blacsmith)and the black horse symbolic of Dawes Brewery. In each corner of the poster is the name Dawes Breweries in a circle. The poster is 9 x approx. 6 1/2 inches. In searching its origin I'm also trying to determine the value of the poster. I believe this poster dates back to at least the 1930s. I am willing to sell this poster for the right price.

No, not Aussie Melbourne - but Melbourn, Cambs. The Black Horse here is our new local - and a very fair dinkum' watering-hole it is too. We will try and get a photo uploaded if poss. Just to note there is an Aussie connection - the pub is run by a couple of friendly antipodians....good beer, good food, good company.

Top quality website -- very erudite on the subject of the Black Horse !!
Just looked in the Northumberland Phone Book and sure enough, NO Black Horses advertisng therein, North of Hadrian's Wall.
Before moving to Wooler 1996, we enjoyed the good food and company in the B.H.at Cornsay.
Landlord's father had been a Lord Mayor of York at one time -- portrait in the pub.
Saw the article in 'Sunday Sun' today.
Good luck on your slightly Arthurian quest of
a pint in every one !! R.F.
